Timing chain guides keep the tension in the timing chain and allow free rotation of the timing chain
They are also repsonible for keeping the chain lubricated.
Over time the guide surface can wear down or get damaged, allowing excessive movement on the timing chain.
It is good practise to change the timing chain guides when changing the chain and tensioner.
